Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Alex Wilkinson as PFA President.
The Socceroos defender was announced by PFA Chairman Craig Foster today as the successor to former President Matt McKay, following a vote of the PFA Executive Committee.
Having served on the PFA Executive Committee since 2007, Wilkinson has also been a member of the PFA Socceroos Committee.
Foster said the Asian Cup winner’s leadership and the respect the playing group have for him made him the outstanding candidate to take on the role.
“Alex was the unanimous pick of the PFA Executive,” said Foster. “On the pitch his achievements are impressive by any ones standards but what he brings of it is equally so.
“In his near 10 years on the PFA Executive Alex has consistently demonstrated his commitment to bettering the lives of Australia’s footballers, strengthening the profession and ensuring the continued growth of the game.
“I have no doubt that he will be a huge success and build on the legacy of those that fulfilled the role of President with such distinction before him.”
Wilkinson said he was honoured to take on the role.
“I’m extremely proud to have been entrusted been by my fellow professionals to take on the Presidency,” said Wilkinson.
“To follow in the footsteps of former PFA Presidents Greg Brown, Kimon Taliadoros, Alex Tobin, Simon Colosimo and Matt McKay is an honour.
“During my time in the game I have experienced life at the very pinnacle of the game and I have also faced many of the difficulties that our members regularly face.
“This, along with the experience I have gained on the PFA Executive and Socceroos Committee, will be invaluable as I look to ensure the interests of all PFA Members are represented.”
