From the Co-Chief Executives
Beau Busch & Kate GillWelcome to the 2024 PFA Annual Report, which summarises the organisation's achievements during the 2023/24 financial year.
Before delving into the collective achievements of the players through the union, we would like to acknowledge the outstanding performances of our members across the 2023/24 season.
Our Matildas members elevated themselves into a different stratosphere making it all the way to a FIFA World Cup Semi-Final on home soil. Central Coast Mariners secured the AFC Cup, following a gruelling campaign across Asia, while also securing their second consecutive A-League Men Championship. Sydney FC wrote themselves into the record books with another A-League Women Championship and another Australia Cup for the Sky Blues' A-League Men side.
The collective achievements of the players domestically were immense, but we also saw Australian players recognised for their excellence internationally. Sam Kerr was once again named in the FIFPRO World 11 and Ellie Carpenter was named as the inaugural AFC Asian Women International Player of the Year.
This report also reveals that there is much PFA members can be proud of from the 2023/24 season, including:
- securing a new world leading Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Socceroos and Matildas;
- record levels of investment into player education and wellbeing initiatives;
- world class research and policy development and delivery;
- the successful delivery of player led social impact programs such as the A-Leagues Pride Celebration and A-Leagues Green Games;
- a record surplus to strengthen the PFA ahead of a critical period of development for the professional game; and
- enhancing the voice of the players' through effective media campaigns such as the Matildas call for FIFA to address gender inequality.
Whilst it is clear that we have made enormous progress, it is self-evident that the professional leagues are currently falling well short of their potential. The platform laid over the course of this period outlined in this report will enable the PFA to address these shortcomings from a position of strength.
Finally, we wish to thank our Executive, Delegates, staff and members across the A-Leagues and the globe for your trust and solidarity.
It will as always be the key to our continued collective success.
