Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today in Melbourne.
Held at the PFA’s offices, the AGM took place with all membership groups having a strong representation.
Following a minute’s silence in recognition of Australian Football legend and PFA Alex Tobin OAM Medallist Joe Marston, who passed away yesterday, the AGM was opened by PFA President Matt McKay.
After McKay’s opening address, PFA Chief Executive Adam Vivian provided an Activity Report for the 2014/15 Financial Year.
Vivian’s report highlighted the work that had been undertaken both in preparation for CBA negotiations, as well as that which has allowed for the growth of the PFA over the past 12 months.
Following the Activities Report the meeting saw the ratification of both the new CBA and appointment of a new Executive Member, with an announcement to be made later this week.
“As always it was extremely pleasing to see the high levels of engagement across all membership categories as we look to continue to grow the game,” said Vivian.
“The past 12 months has been challenging and today was an important opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved and what we have overcome.
“The players’ resolve to achieve an agreement that delivered for all stakeholders was prevalent throughout negotiations, with our members today once again reaffirming their commitment to continued growth.”
PFA President Matt McKay said the meeting also allowed the players to reflect on the future of Australian football.
“This CBA gives the game a platform to move forward but what was clear throughout the AGM was that the players believe there remains much to be done if football is to achieve its potential,” said McKay.
“The past week has presented challenges for the game to address. The players are firm in their support of the fans and the players must stand with them.
“The fans make the A-League the competition what it is today and the players support them in ensuring their rights and interests are protected.
“Fans of the A-League are the best of any sport in Australia. They make players proud to play football in Australia.”
