One of English football’s most distinguished and celebrated players, Tony Adams MBE, will provide Australia’s professional footballers with insights into his successful career – and the wellbeing challenges associated with his recovery from alcoholism.
As part of the PFA’s Player Development Program, Adams will deliver an exclusive webinar for all PFA members – including those within the Past Player Program – this Wednesday 27 October.
Adams made his debut for Arsenal in 1983 and retired in 2002 after a career spanning almost 20 years. During this career, Adams played 669 matches and became universally recognised as the most successful captain in the history of the London club.
Nicknamed “Mr Arsenal”, Adams also played 66 matches for England, captaining his country on 15 occasions, and featured in the 1988, 1996, and 2000 European Championships and the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
While Adams’ accomplishments and legacy as a player are well documented, Adams struggled with alcoholism, which affected his life and career. Adams revealed his personal challenges in his autobiography ‘Addicted’, published in 1998.
The proceeds from his book and his commitment to helping others saw the creation of the Sporting Chance charity in 2000, of which he remains the President.
PFA Co-Chief Executive Kathryn Gill said the opportunity to hear from Adams would allow PFA members to better understand the wellbeing challenges associated with professional football and the importance of support available to players.
“The Players’ Journey with Tony Adams MBE delivers an opportunity for PFA members to gain an insight into Tony’s career as a footballer, his challenges off the pitch that led to addiction, his recovery and rehabilitation and his lessons learned along the way.
“We expect that many PFA members will gain a deeper understanding of Tony’s experience not only as a footballer but as a person, which will no doubt help them navigate their own challenges in their careers, build resilience, as well as understand they are not alone if they are suffering.”
