Following the conclusion of the domestic competitions, the A-League and W-League, the PFA would like to congratulate the LUCRF Super PFA Players of the Month, as voted by their peers throughout their respective seasons.
December 2020/January 2021
With the A-League season commencing late in December, the first award was split across December and January.
Central Coast Mariners’ teenage sensation Alou Kuol and Canberra United’s mercurial Michelle Heyman were the first to secure the accolade for strong performances at the start of the season.
Initially selected alongside a shortlist of players by the PFA nominations committee, Kuol and Heyman received the highest number of votes from their peers to be crowned as December and January’s best performers according to Australia’s professional footballers.
February 2021
In February, Central Coast Mariners won back-to-back PFA Player of the Month Awards with midfielder Oliver Bozanic securing the player-voted honour.
Bozanic joined Kuol on the honours roll for the 2020/21 campaign, and his win underlined the Mariners’ dominance during the opening months of the A-League season. In the W-League, Sydney FC’s Clare Wheeler edged out teammate Teresa Polias and Emily Gielnik (Brisbane Roar) to win the W-League player vote.
March 2021
Melbourne Victory’s Kyra Cooney-Cross marked an impressive run of personal form, with PFA members voting the Australian youth international as the PFA’s W-League Player of the Month for March, and as the captain of the PFA’s W-League Team of the Season, following Victory’s Grand Final triumph.
With six goals in five matches, Melbourne City FC’s goal-scoring machine Jamie Maclaren was pivotal to City’s five consecutive wins, helping establish the Melbourne club as serious A-League contenders, earning himself a first Player of the Month award.
April 2021
Maclaren continued his prolific run of form in April, scoring eight goals in Melbourne City FC’s six matches throughout April.
The 27-year-old scored a record-equalling five goals in one A-League match in the 7-0 thrashing of Melbourne Victory, netted a crucial penalty eight minutes into stoppage time at the end of a 1-1 draw with Sydney and scored in wins over the Jets and Wellington Phoenix as City shot up to the A-League’s summit. Maclaren also became the fastest player in Australian national league history to net 100 goals – taking just 144 games to do so.
May 2021
In the final month of voting, Wellington Phoenix’s Tomer Hemed edged out Bobô and Craig Noone to win the final Player of the Month award for the 2020/21 season.
Wellington Phoenix narrowly missed qualification for the 2021 Finals Series after an impressive run of form in the back end of the regular season. The Nix’s Israeli centre forward, Hemed, was largely responsible for Wellington’s form, scoring five times in six matches throughout May. The striker scored in four consecutive matches, including a double against City in a 2-2 draw, including an 88th minute equaliser, and singles in wins over Western United (3-0) and Western Sydney (2-1) and in a draw with Perth Glory (2-2).
