Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) has today hailed the exceptional achievement of the Matildas following their victory over Brazil at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Matildas became the first Australian National Team to win a knockout stages clash at the World Cup when Kyah Simon scored to hand them a 1-0 victory over the Samba Kings.
With the Matildas now eyeing a Quarter Finals clash with either Japan or the Netherlands, PFA Chief Executive Adam Vivian labeled the achievement as truly remarkable.
“On behalf of the PFA Executive Committee and all our members I would like to congratulate the Matildas players on this historic achievement,” said Vivian. “The players’ performances throughout the tournament have been truly world class and they are deserving of their place in Australian football history.
“The players work ethic, commitment and pride in representing their country has been demonstrated repeatedly throughout the tournament and this is very much the fruit of their labour. This current generation of players, like those before them, have sacrificed enormously in pursuit of representing their country and they should be extremely proud of what they have achieved.”
PFA President Matt McKay echoed Vivian’s comments.
“This is truly an historic day for Australian football and the players are extremely deserving of this honour,” said McKay.
“Their football throughout the tournament has been of the highest possible calibre and they have captured the imagination of the Australian public and I’m sure they will inspire the next generation for years to come.
“Finally I would like to wish the Matildas all the very best for the Quarter Final where I’m sure they will write another chapter into Australian football history.”
