Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) has today paid tribute to Matildas ace Elise Kellond-Knight after the midfielder was announced amongst the nominees for the 2015 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Player of the Year Award.
Having starred for the Matildas during their historic 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup run, where they made the Quarter-finals, Kellond-Knight was selected alongside Japanese duo Aya Miyama and Rumi Utsugi in the three player shortlist.
Currently plying her trade in Germany with FFC Turbine Potsdam, the former Brisbane Roar player enjoyed a stellar 2015. After starring for the Matildas, Kellond-Knight was named in the FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star Squad alongside teammate Lisa De Vanna.
With duo Katrina Gorry and Kathryn Gill having both previously been crowned as the AFC Women’s Player of the Year, PFA Chief Executive Adam Vivian said the nomination further highlighted the quality of the country’s footballers.
“On behalf of the all our members I would like to congratulate Elise on this well deserved recognition,” Vivian said.
“The Matildas have shown everyone what they are capable off, with some truly remarkable performances at the World Cup.
“Elise is a ‘world class’ player, and she consistently showed that during the World Cup where she was instrumental in the Matildas’ success.
“Australia’s footballers are continuing to raise the bar and the future is extremely bright for the game with players like Elise leading the way.”
