November is the month and Movember is the movement. Movember is an annual, month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November.
It helps to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health. Movember is the world’s largest men’s health movement and the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer globally.
Australian footballers have once again thrown their support behind Movember after acknowledging that one of the biggest obstacles men tackle in regards to general wellbeing is a reluctance to discuss the health issues. Movember was born from recognition that a fun and engaging initiative could help encourage men to become more actively involved in their own health.
The player driven participation started this year on November 1st with a clean shave and then, for the rest of the month, the players put their personal appearances aside for a cause that continues to build momentum around the world each year.
The players become fantastic ambassadors for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words they raise awareness and prompt conversation around the all too often unheeded issue of men’s health.
Many athletes have been a great source of inspiration by actively using the power of sports to support health causes. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise those that are raising funds and awareness for a great cause by sponsoring one of the many A-League players who may be sporting a ‘handlebar’ a ‘horse shoe’ or a ‘fumanchu’ in the month of November.
