The PFA has launched a new webinar series for members – Life After Football – which details how past players have transitioned into the next phase of their careers after retirement.
Produced by the PFA’s Player Development Program team, the webinar series aims to highlight a number of different career paths that footballers have chosen after they have retired.
So far, the series has highlighted a number of different careers, including real estate, coaching and social media networking.
The 45-minute webinars have included information about the given career, pathways and course options, to go with a feature story of a former footballer who has had success in that field.
Former A-Leagues players Brent Griffiths, Jason Hoffman and Andrew Durante featured in the first three webinars in the series, discussing their transition into life after hanging up the boots.
“We are really excited to have brought this project to life this year,” PFA Head of Player Development Rita Mankowska said.
“The aim was to showcase a number of different career paths available to footballers post-career, and also to highlight a past player who has excelled in that field.
“By doing so, we are hoping to inspire our members to consider life after football while they are still playing, and hopefully encourage them to take a step towards preparing for retirement.
“We sometimes forget that we have a wealth of knowledge in our PFA Past Player Program members. Many of these players have walked in the shoes of our current members, and are proof that life after football can be an exciting new chapter, particularly if players take steps towards preparing for retirement when they are still playing.
“It has been inspiring to hear the likes of Brent, Jason and Andrew share their stories, and we are excited to hear from some female past players in the upcoming webinars.”
Here’s a summary of the webinars that have been held so far.
Brent Griffiths
The first in the series put a career in Real Estate in the spotlight, with a chat to former A-Leagues defender Brent Griffiths.
Since retiring, Griffiths has established a successful career in Real Estate, working for a number of realtors in Perth including Burgess Rawson and Realmark Commercial – where he served as a Director.
He now works as Principal of Belle Property Commercial Perth.
Jason Hoffman
Newcastle Jets legend Jason Hoffman spoke about about the importance of networking and LinkedIn in helping prepare players for life after football.
He joined Player Development Manager Emily Figueroa to chat through how networking has served him well throughout his career, as he transitioned from retiring at the end of the 2023-24 season to becoming the Jets’ Corporate and Player Welfare Manager.
Andrew Durante
The latest webinar saw A-Leagues legend Andrew Durante chat through his transition from player to coach after retiring in 2021.
Durante caught up with PFA Player Development Manager and former A-Leagues player Cameron Watson to discuss how he set himself up for post-football career in coaching, including a role as the assistant coach of the Philippines Women’s National team and Western United’s A-League Men’s side.
