Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) is pleased to launch of the PFA A-League Team of the Decade.
Aimed at honouring the outstanding contribution the players have made to the growth of the competition, the PFA A-League Team of the Decade will see the PFA’s A-League members past and present cast their votes in a 4-3-3 formation, with five substitutes, a coach and referee also to be selected.
Set to be announced on Monday the 27th of April at a Gala Event at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour all players that have played a minimum of two seasons in the A-League are eligible for selection.
PFA President Matt McKay said the PFA A-League Team of the Decade provides the ideal time to recognise the players who laid the foundations for the current competition.
“When the players made the decision to close down the old NSL many sacrificed their own playing careers because they believed it to be in the best interests of the game,” said McKay.
“Without their selflessness the game would not be in the shape it’s in now and this event provides the current generation of players with the chance to pay their respects to the past as well as celebrating the present.”
PFA Chief Executive Adam Vivian said the event presented the ideal opportunity to reflect on the progress of the competition.
“Just over ten years ago the players put their faith in a competition that gave very few guarantees,” said Vivian.
“Throughout the last ten seasons the players have worked tirelessly on and off the pitch to grow the competition and the transformation of the game in this country has been truly remarkable.
“On the pitch we have been fortunate to have had many outstanding players ply their trade in the competition and the PFA A-League Team of the Decade gives us all an opportunity to reflect on this.
“I’m sure there will be fierce debate in change rooms around the country amongst our A-League members and the talk in our alumni will be equally so.
“I would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support of PFA Major Partner LUCRF Super, NSR Australia, Travellers Choice and the Australian National Maritime Museum for making this event possible.”
