Eugene Galekovic eyes a record equaling fourth appearance in the PFA A-League Team of the Season after the Adelaide United shot-stopper is announced as one of three shortlisted goalkeepers after a stellar 2013/2014 season.
Joined by the 2012/2013 Team of the Season keeper Ante Covic and Perth Glory’s Danny Vukovic the trio polled the highest following a vote of all A-League players.
With the PFA A-League Team of the Season set to be unveiled at the Alex Tobin OAM Medal Event on Friday, May 23 at the Australian National Maritime Museum the three keepers are vying for a starting place and a spot on the substitutes bench in the 16 man squad.
Having been voted by his peers as the top keeper in the A-League in seasons 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 and amongst the substitutes in 2012/2013 Galekovic was once again outstanding between the posts for Adelaide. With only Archie Thompson having made the Team of the Season on four occasions the Reds Skipper will equal the record held by the Victory striker if he makes the 2013/2014 side.
Despite finishing the season in eighth position Perth Glory had the sixth best defence in the league thanks in no small part to the form of Vukovic. So impressive were the performances of the former Olyroo that he earned a loan move to J-League side Vegalta Sendai.
Racking up 11 clean sheets for the season Covic played a starring role for the Western Sydney Wanderers as they made it back-to-back Grand Final appearances and sealed another Asian Champions League campaign.
The twice capped Socceroo said it was honour to be voted by his peers as one of the top three keepers in the league.
“This season we have seen some truly outstanding performances from goalkeepers and the standard has never been higher.
“For the players to vote me into the top three alongside Eugene and Danny and to be in the running for the Team of the Season is a massive honour as there is no higher recognition then that of your fellow professionals.”
The PFA A-League Team of the Season defenders shortlist will be unveiled tomorrow.
