Austraffic POTM: Sydney FC’s Lolley scores award for October form

Sydney FC’s Joe Lolley has impressed his A-League Men peers during his first month of action in Australian football, earning their vote to win the Austraffic PFA Player of the Month award for October.

The 30-year-old Englishman who signed with the Sky Blues in August, edged out fellow nominees and FIFA World Cup bound trio Mathew Leckie, Jamie Maclaren and Craig Goodwin, as well as Western Sydney’s Calem Nieuwenhof.

Joining Sydney FC after a successful spell for Nottingham Forest in the English Championship, where Lolley helped secure promotion to the Premier League, the left-footed winger has looked right at home in the A-League Men, scoring twice in Sydney FC’s two wins in four games.

“It’s a really nice honour, especially coming from those we play against every week and hopefully it won’t be the last,” Lolley told pfa.net.au upon winning the award.

“I felt that if I worked hard, got myself fit and stayed hungry that I could have a positive impact on the league and I always try to be the best player in my position wherever I’ve played.

“Obviously from a team point of view we want to become more consistent and get more wins on the board and individually I’ve really enjoyed the start but hopefully can keep adding more goals.

“It’s been a good [start] but plenty more to come; I think I could have added a couple more goals but each game I’ve been getting fitter and so hopefully I can keep improving.”

Widely acknowledged as the most prestigious monthly award in Australian football, the Austraffic A-Leagues Player of the Month Award is the only peer-voted award in the A-Leagues.

After each month of action in the A-League Men and Women competitions, an expert panel consisting of former players and media experts put forward nominees for the PFA membership to vote on.

The Austraffic PFA Player of the Month is the only player-voted award in the A-Leagues. After each month of A-Leagues action, a PFA Nominations Committee, consisting of football media personalities and former players, provide nominees for the PFA membership to vote on. The awards are proudly presented in partnership with Austraffic.
